Seriously though! St. Jacobs is a lovely little village and we found the story of the Mennonites as told in the Visitor Centre very interesting. As we came into the village there was a horse and buggy with two black bonneted and black clad women making its way out. From what we learned, these must have been the more traditional Mennonites who keep to the traditional garb. In the village we saw other traditional Mennonites and also some less traditional whose clothing was in colour, though still what we would class old-fashioned, but bonnets and hats in black. It was difficult not to stare as these are just normal people living their lives in the way they want to live their lives and following their own beliefs. What is really interesting is that wanting to live their lives in private in their communities and observing the ways of life and dress and religious practice that they believe in is, in fact, what draws attention to them. We hope to go back to St. Jacobs on a market day as, they say, the food there is fantastic.
Jim continues to be happy in Joe Dogs but will have a day out for the market in St. Jacobs.
Today has been the first really beautiful day, weatherwise, since we arrived and it was lovely to be able to eat our evening meal out on Rick and Eva's patio, in the sun, but with a light cooling breeze. We look forward to having a barbecue there when Oli arrives.
