Fort Erie and Niagara-on-the-Lake

Sunday morning and, from the number of churches in this area, we reckoned roads would not be too clogged. We decided that we needed to see another lake and that, having seen one consonant in HOMES, we would go to see E, as in Erie. So off we set to Fort Erie which is just across from Buffalo in the US. Again lots of wineries en route with perfectly manicured lawns and mature trees. The raindrops spattered on the windscreen, then gradually became heavy rain and then a deluge. By the time we reached Fort Erie it was impossible to get out of the car or take a photo of Lake Erie or of Buffalo which we could discern across the lake and which is accessed by a Peace Bridge but which we could not cross as our exchange car is not insured for the US. About turn and Jim had a brainwave! We would go to Niagara-on-the Lake (still avoiding Niagara Falls which we are saving for when Oli joins us!) and have a look round. En route rain, intermittent rain, drizzle, rain, a few drops and then... sunshine. I would have wet my plants but they were back in Victoria! Niagara-on-the Lake is a beautiful town and, understandably, a tourist trap. The shops are housed in beautiful buildings, even Starbucks, and the shops are interesting (for a first-time visitor anyway.

The Prince Of Wales Hotel.

Nice to look at but expensive to use!

We wandered for 2 hours and had lunch in a place called "Corks" - lovely special of lamb burger and Greek pasta salad. We passed Cow's, seemingly famous for ice-cream, fortunately when I could eat no more!

This is Bessie.

There are lots of animal puns here as there were in BC. Most of them find their way onto tshirts.

An Irish Tea Room not a pub! The Irish Design actually had Magee Suits.

The Shaw Cafe and Wine Bar looked lovely and inviting but we had already been corked!

We had already noticed that The Shaw Festival was an important several- month-long event in Niagara-on-the-Lake and I said to Jim, it's hardly George Bernard?

Interesting - the theatre is called "The Royal George!

Hmm - a statue of George Bernard Shaw!
Haven't exactly figured out the connection!

Anyway, we liked Niagara-on-the Lake and will return to further explore.

Not far out of the town, the rain returned and, at one stage was in danger of causing us to have to stop because the driver couldn't see!

Back home it was fine though wet under foot - what are the gods of all the churches at?
