Quebec City July 6th

Despite getting directions in the ? to where to park in the Upper Town, Nuvi sent us back, almost to Montreal - well not quite! At any rate we parked rather later than we had planned and in a rather fractious mood! That dissipated, however, once we got face to face with Chateau Frontenac.

Chateau Frontenac - A Fairmont Hotel just like Chateau Laurier in Ottawa.
We went for a long walk along Dufferin Terrace and then along Promenade des Gouverneurs. There were great views of the St. Lawrence River. It finally brought us out at the citadelle.

We also had a look at Notre Dame Basilica-Cathedral. It is quite beautiful inside.

Blessed Francois Laval de Montmorency was the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Quebec and was one of the most influential men of his day.His statue is standing near the Notre Dame Basilica.

Having explored a bit of the Upper Town, we took the steps down to the Lower Town where we had been the night before because there were photos we wanted to take.

Notre Dame des Victoires in Place Royale.

Place Royale

Fresque en trompe-l'oeil - a trompe-l'oeil mural.
This is a brilliant mural - so vivid and living. You could stand for hours looking at the detail. It is the work of 12 artists from Quebec and from France. It celebrates the architecture and the countryside of Quebec and presents around 30 people in the changing scenes of the seasons.

Preserved ruins just off Place Royale.

Above and right La Vivriere Monument which depicts the port of Quebec as a woman and in her arms is food from all continents, symbol of generosity, abundance and fertility. The base from which the figurehead emerges remembers the banks of the St. Lawrence once present there.

A minor mural on a panel.

Louis XIV.

Very pretty historic building.

We had lunch in Le Cochon Dingue - the crazy pig! There was almost a whole street devoted to this restaurant and the waitress we had was the friendliest and most efficient waitress we have ever had. She even offered to fill my bottle of water with iced water!

The view of Chateau de Frontenac from where we dined the night before.

Street flowers that smelled gorgeous.

Beautiful historic house - Maison Chevalier.

The funiculaire which we took to get back to the Upper City.

Floral decoration in front of Hotel de Ville.
On our way back to the car we discovered a tribute to the Irish of Quebec.

Views from the walls which we walked briefly before we got into the car to go to Montmorency Falls.

One day is not enough to do Quebec justice but one day was all we had and we did the best we could with our time!
