Quebec evening of July 5th

We had an uneventful journey to our hotel which the net had said was 10 minutes from Vieux Quebec. It wasn't 10 minutes walk and it wasn't even 10 minutes drive! Jim was in dire need of a pint. You've heard of the pub with no beer, well this hotel had no bar and the onsite restaurant had only wine. Both wine and food were way beyond our budget! So beer and food had to be found and, of course, beer can only be taken if not in charge of a motorised vehicle. We eventually discovered (following language difficulties, as all discussion takes place in French or in very broken English) that there was a bus (the 400) that stopped on Chemin des Hotels and went into Vieux Quebec. Off we ran to the only bus shelter we could find to see the 400 pulling off from a stop opposite the hotel on the other side. Off we ran to the other side to see a 400 stopping opposite us. Too late but we crossed the street to discover that we had now found the proper bus stop - it had 400 written on it. It was a case of waiting for the next bus. We finally sat down to eat and drink at 8.30 p.m. We were in a street called Le Petit Champlain and towering above us was the Chateau Frontenac. It was a beautiful setting as the sun was going down - ideal photo opportunity. But... Jim had forgotten the camera!

Later, we wandered through the Lower Town's cobbled streets looking at the buildings and shops. It was as if we were in a French town. It reminded me a bit of St. Malo. Anyway it is really beautiful. While we were wandering through Place Royale there were two groups obviously on a Ghost Tour. That would have been great if we had been there with time to organise it.

Going into Vieux Quebec left us in a position to know what we wanted to see and take photos of the next morning. We had no difficulty getting a bus back to the hotel because we had taken note of exactly where the stop was!
