Merrickville

Yesterday, Monday, we visited Merrickville. It is about an hour away from Ottawa on the Rideau Canal. There are three locks on the Rideau Canal at Merrickville so we spent a lot of time watching the lock stewards opening and closing locks and rotating the bridge in order to let boats through. There were quite a lot of boat,s some of them really big - obviously there are some very wealthy people about!

The sign where we parked.

A knocking shop in Merrickville!

The bridge when it is rotated to let boats through.

We did our return trip through Perth where we had spent some time with Ted and Nancy. There we stopped to look again at the beautiful Stewart Park.

Irish pub in Perth.

The big cheese!
This monument celebrates the Mammoth Cheese or "Fromage Elephant" that was made by the Canadian Cheese industry for the Chicago Fair of 1893. It was 6ft high and 28ft in circumference. It was made from 207,220 pounds of milk the equivalent of one day production from 10,000 cows. It weighed 22,000 lbs. When the Mammoth Cheese arrived at the exhibition, it was too big for the Canadian display, promptly crashing through the floor and a new display with reinforced concrete had to be built. It was the most talked about exhibit at the fair.

When we got home we discovered that supermarkets were closed because of Canada Day and our cupboard was bare!. So we tried a Pizza place recommended by Dave and Lorna and dined on really nice pizzas.
