Venice

We decided that the best way to see Venice was by taking the number1 vaporetto along the Canal Grande but in the meantime we would wend our way either to Piazza San Marco or Ponte Rialto.

Jim being told off by a street artist for taking photos!

One of 2 Irish pubs that we saw en route

Ponte Rialto it was as we quoted  lines from Shylock in Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice". I warned Jim against spitting on gaberdines or any kind of clothing!

The crowds were packed tightly along the bridge. Following several and many photos we decided it was time to see the Canal Grande from the water. Having never been in Venice before and never having negotiated water buses, we found ourselves on the number 2 but had no idea which direction. Not to worry, Jim took lots of photos.

We knew we didn't want to go the way in which we were headed so we got off somewhere (can't remember now!) to find ourselves on Fondamenta Zattere. I remembered that both Marco and Gloria had mentioned a special ice-cream to be bought at Nico Gelateria. We wandered along hoping to find it but in vain.

It was coming near lunchtime so we wanted to get a bit off the beaten track to lunch where prices were reasonable. In the process we stumbled upon The Peggy Guggenheim Museum and Gallery. We promised ourselves a visit once we had sustenance. We had a lovely lunch with just a little wine and had no difficulty finding the Guggenheim and enjoying the exhibits.

I wonder were they dogs or cats?

Very interesting!

Back to the vaporetta stop and number 2 again the opposite way.

We went as far as Ferrovia where we descended and made our way home through the ghetto where my foot was in bad need of elevation. An hour or so later we went out to a nearby pub for an aperitif and some cicchetti - little snacks to accompany your glass of wine/beer.

Dinner was salad, though after the snacks we had little need, because that was in the fridge and would be no good to Marco on his next visit!
