Market in Arpajon sur Cere; cornet festival in Murat September 16th 2018

This morning we got up and went immediately to the market in town. It’s a small market with a few fruit and veg stalls, a few cheese stalls, a butcher, a bread stall. We bought a Salers savoury tart and a cucumber. Got a fresh baguette and went home for breakfast. We then went to Murat which was having its 14th annual festival of the cornet - a cone shaped biscuit which can be filled with different creamy fillings. The journey there was through beautiful countryside, basically on the chemin des monts de Cantal. We were fortunate to arrive early enough to get parked in the centre of the main car park. When we got into the town there were a few bands (brass, flute, jazz) performing in the main square. There was a cafe just there and seats available so we had a cafe creme. From there we were able to watch proceedings.

Built on the Rocher de Bonnevie towering above the old town of Murat is Notre Dame de la Consolation/ Notre Dame de Haute Auvergne. It is a metal statue of the Virgin measuring 8 metres high and weighing 13780 kg.

About 20 people had to make speeches and then the festival was officially open. A few people on stilts were there to entertain us. We went to the tourist office to enquire about proceedings and were told we had to pay 1.50 each if we wanted to taste a cornet. There were about 16 stalls throughout the town with different flavoured fillings. We tried 2 and they were nice enough.

There was a marquee for games for adults and children.

There were vintage cars.

Eglise Notre Dame des Oliviers.

In the covered market there was a cornet making competition.

These street performers were very funny.

After doing the town we went to Riom es Montagnes where we had lunch. Then on to Mauriac but we did not stop but just came home. Then we took a trip looking for La Planteliere but in vain – nuvi took us on a dangerous windy narrow road!
