August 22nd 2019 - Prien am Chiemsee and Herreninsel; Reit im Winkl

Today We went to Prien am Chiemsee, the largest village on Lake Chiemsee (the Bavarian Sea) from where we took the ferry to Herrininsel, the biggest of 3 islands on the lake. Only 30 people inhabit this island but it is very popular with daytrippers. It was a 20 minute walk to the Herrenchiemsee Palace. Some people chose to take the easy way.

Herrenchiemsee Palace was designed as an accurate reproduction, on a bigger scale, of Versailles. We didn't take the tour of the interior but can imagine its opulence. the gardens are palatial and the two mythological fountains very beautiful.

We enjoyed our walk back through the parkland.

Then it was back to Prien by boat and a stop for coffee and cake. From there we went on to Reit im Winkl - the journey there was beautiful. The village is lovely and it offers unspoilt scenery as far as the eye can see, but very touristy. It is an important winter ski resort on the Bavarian/Austrian border.

Giant Village Maypoles are a tradition in Bavaria. They are tall tree trunks with no branches erected before the 1st of May and festively decorated. The are traditionally painted in the colours of the coat of arms, blue and white. The treetop is decorated with a green wreath. It is also decorated with signs indicating local crafts and guilds.

As we were driving away we passed this house with  the birth of a new baby, Benedikt being celebrated

Back home dinner was an omelette which was more like scrambled egg by the time I got it out of the pan because no egg slice in Carmen's.
