Vouvant and Mervent - Monday September 10th 2018

The three of us took a lie in and then went to Vouvant and Mervent. Vouvant is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. This is because of its setting overlooking a meander of the river Mere.

This is the Melusine Tower. The village of Vouvant is associated with Melusine, a legendary figure in Europe - half fairy, half snake - who was said to have inhabited the forest here and to have built Vouvant castle in a single night. The Melusine Tower is all that remains of the castle. Below - a view of the town from the first aperture in the tower.

The chevalier's oath involves a promise to protect the church, defend the weak, love his country, never to flee from the enemy, to fight the infidels, never to lie, to be liberal and generous, to fight injustice and evil.

A depiction of Melusine.

All these photos were taken by Brian who was ther only one of us who climbed the tower.

I think there is a lizard in there somewhere.

We took a walk following the path around the village between the ramparts and the river.

We came across this little grotto.

La laverie. Above the stone bridge.

The mainly Romanesque style Church of Our Lady - being repaired inside so we could not really explore it.

We went on to Mervent. In this photo I am looking aut at the Mervent forest, the largest forest in Vendee.

Then we went to look for the Moulins de Pouzauges which we had missed the day we went to Pouzauges. However they are only open on a Sunday. They have been restored and are working again.

We went to Trois Collines, the local pub which is only recently reopened, for an aperitif. They were very friendly there.
