Friday June 1st - Witzenhausen

Friday we did a bit of a road trip. We set off for Bremke. From there we went to Besenhausen where there is a woollen factory with a nice coffee shop. However, we were there an hour before it opened and it was quite clear we were not welcome. Nice flowers though!

We passed through Reinhausen where there is a lot of red sandstone with houses built into it. Then we went to Witzenhausen where we had lunch and a look around

Jacob Grimm was one of the Gottingen Seven who revolted against the repeal of the state constitution by the new Hanoverian king Ernst-August von Cumberland and was then expelled with two other professors in the country. After the expulsion they drove to Witzenhausen where they were received with thundering applause at the Werra Bridge. A delegation of students helped the professors out of the carriage and led them across the bridge into the city where they addressed their followers. This statue commemorates the occasion.

Waffles with cherries - a specialty of the area.

This sculpture is in front of the Rathaus - one person bearing another's burden.

Then we went back to Hann Munden and drove up one side of the Wesser through Hemeln – we didn’t see the Pied Piper. We continued on as far as Oedelsheim where we crossed to the other side and drove south to Hann Munden again and then back to Gottingen via Dransfeld. The landscape throughout was very beautiful. When we got to Gottingen we made a vain attempt to get to Kiessee. Then another trip into town where I had a mojito.

Back in Gottingen there was a large group of people dancing to music on a ghetto-blaster
