September 20th 2017 - Schoonhoven and Oudewater

There was no rain this morning though it was a bit overcast. We decided to stay reasonably local so went first to Schoonhoven where we had a nice tour round. There was a market on so it made it difficult to get parking. However we succeeded. There were a lot of silversmiths at the market. I later learnt that gold and silver smith work is traditional here. Below is what is on the DSchoonhoven flag.

Sculpture of a silversmith.

One of the many styles of bicycles - for carrying shopping or children.

Then we went to Oudewater. Again there was a market so had a look round. Had a strange lunch - Jim has slivers of raw fish with melon and cream and pickle of some sort. I had couscous with beetroot. The couscous was in clumps. There were big bits of a creamy cheese. It was ok. It was a nice journey there and back because we were on country roads.

These were lovely sculptures in a small lake.

In Oudewater there is the Museum de Waag which is better known as Heksenwaag (Witches Weighhouse).  The same scales used to weigh cheese and produce were also used to weigh women to determine if they were witches. I can very definitely tell you that I am not a witch! It was believed that witches weigh next to nothing. We didn't go to the museum but we did notice the number of decorative witches on sale.

A rather unusual sign for the ladies and, below, the gents.

And then it was back to the car opposite those lovely hair washing ladies and a return to Gouda.

Then we went into Gouda where the funfair was in full flight - very noisy! We had a look at a few places we hadn't yet been including the sculpture below. We had noticed it every day on the way into the city so went to have a closer look. It is a man carrying a donkey. I'm sure there is a story behind it but I have not been able to find it. Seemingly it is an artwork by the Amsterdam sculptor Jack Assman and symbolises the upside down world. The sculpture has been nicknames Jack-Ass.

And we came across this statue of a fireman.

And another bicycle made for transportation of goods.

Another cheese shop -  we got some award winning goats’ cheese and some salad and crackers for tomorrow.

The main square is totally transformed for the fun fair and not for the better!

Stocks near one of the canals.

And another view of the man carrying the donkey.

Was tempted to bring these back to the Goudie family!
