September 16th - market Gouda

After a night of rain we woke to rain but  we wanted to go to the market so we got the raincoats on and off we went. There was loads of cheese but also good fruit and veg, bread and fish so next week hopefully we will purchase for dinner with Mary. Part of the market place was set aside for what looked to be a cattle mart. The cows looked really shiny and there were people going round behind them with buckets in case one of them was caught short! They even wiped their bums!!

We were fascinated by the number of people on bicycles everywhere and by their very upright way of cycling  - like the high Nellies we used to have in the past!

Jim was determined to try raw herring, a Dutch specialty. So of course that had to be bought. He decided to eat it the Rotterdam way by lowering it full into his mouth. Actually it is not really raw but cured in some way. I tried a little too but I was a bit more genteel - using a knife and fork. It was fishy - surprise, surprise!

It continued to pour all day now so I spent the time planning. I made an omelette with Gouda and mushrooms but it stuck to the pan! Good though.
