Today we headed back to Burghausen because we had only passed through it the last day. We parked beside the tourist office and went in. The girl was very friendly and had good English. She gave us a map and a booklet about the town in English. We perused both over coffee after looking at some of the lovely old houses.

Then we did In Den Gruben, an area that used to be the moat of the fortress and has lots of little quaint shops. All along the street are plaques indicating which jazz musicians have played here.
We drove up to the castle - the longest in the world and the most effective fortress in the country - and walked its length and breadth. The complex is divided into 5 large courtyards which would have been originally protected by moats, portcullises and drawbridges. Some of the buildings seem to be inhabited.
After lunch at the Hotel del Post we went to Amerang to suss out a restaurant that Carmen had recommended. We couldn't find it and were too tired to explore the castle. The weather was very overcast.
Carmen and Karsten arrived early evening to get their paddle boards. They were having the weekend to themselves as their daughter's parents in law were going to look after the children. They suggested that we go to Silvensteinersee as it is very beautiful there. That is where they were going to camp and paddle board. Karsten asked Jim if we would leave a day early as their daughter was getting out of hospital and her house was too small to accommodate everyone. Of course it was no problem to us. We were considering doing part of the Romantic Road and staying somewhere overnight. Then I remembered that Kerstin and Rainer (our Magdeburg exchangers) were leaving on Friday so I emailed them to see if we could arrive a day early. They agreed so we were sorted.
