We were preparing for Eric's arrival so decided to take an easy day, get some extra food in and basically enjoy the local area. In the morning we went to Escuelina. a small town, in the hope of getting cake or tart for dessert. No luck there! We went on to Salent de Gallego and saw a bakery shop which did have cake. We trekked through the town while we decided whether we should buy or not.
We did but it was huge! Then we stopped at a small supermarket and got a block of Nata - plain ice cream I think. Of course I had to do a quality check when I got home - and it passed!
It was still quite early so we went in search of Jarres Castle but were not successful so back to Tramacastilla where we decided to lunch in Lavedan which opens only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We had a selection of raciones which were good but which you could not have every day - too much deep-fried stuff! Then we thought about going on the Tren Turistico which was a good idea because, Jim having had beer, we would not be taking the car out. The Tren Turistico takes you on a circular route up the mountain and through stunning landscapes of the Valley de Tena. On our way down to the train a French woman called to us from a parked car wanting to know where to get the train so, with my French and our local knowledge, we were a good help. We had to wait 45 minutes for the train - I think they could possibly devise a better system. On busy days I'm sure people can be disappointed after the wait to discover that there is not enough room for them.
This is the church just up a bit from where we were waiting. Double bells seems to be a feature of this area.
Down below in the car park - our carriages!
Anyway there was plenty of room and off we went. It was basically a tractor with open carriages.
The scenery was absolutely beautiful! The trip was rather bumpy and dusty but we didn't let that bother us as it was easy to be distracted by all there was to see.
It was really idyllic up in the mountains looking at the scenery, the animals and the wild flowers. What wasn't so idyllic was returning home black in the face and with every stitch of clothing requiring a wash. But it was all worth it!
