July 14th 2017 - Dartmoor; Tavistock; Buckland Abbey

It was Carol and Stephen's turn to see Dartmoor so we did a trip from Ashburton to Morehamptonstead to Tavistock. We stopped at Postbridge to see the Clapper Bridge.

This is one of the best preserved clapper bridges in Dartmoor. It crosses the East Dart, a tributary of the river Dart, and was built so that packhorses could carry tin to Tavistock.

The bridge that is used nowadays - very pretty too.

In Tavistock we had a look at the market and had lunch there. Stephen and Carol were attracted to the stall selling hats and both succumber to the temptation.

Buckland Abbey, once the home of Sir Francis Drake, wasn't far from Tavistock so we decided to take a look. We were very fortunate, I think, that Andrew Logan's exhibition, The Art of Reflection, was on at the time. Andrew Logan is the creator of artworks from the shattered shards of mirrors and urban flotsam. It was fascinating to see a modern artist display works inspired by his surroundings in this historical Abbey which was founded in 1278. We loved it - particularly Carol - but it seems that some of the National Trust volunteers were less than enthusiastic.

This is Pegasus - Birth, Life and Death.

Stephen at his favourite pastime - dressing up!

Andrew Logan's Humpty Dumpty in one of the ovens - I nearly missed it!

Universe Throne and Elements Throne.

Here and below - Altar Cross

The (Holy) Family.

Above and here - Goldfield. This artwork is one of Logan's earliest pieces from 1976. It fills Bucklands Great Barn with high wheat stalks, field mice and floating butterflies. It is amazing!

Excaliber - really impressive!

Four Flowers of the Apocalypse

Some real flowers in the garden.

Back home I cooked braised venison sausages - delicious - and we enjoyed Jenny's crumble.
