Today was a free day . I didn't have a great night's sleep as I had severe leg cramps. I gave breakfast a miss and we met up with Sarak and Charlotte at 9.30 am and set off for the San Pedro market. In the Plaza De Armas it was clear there was some celebration but we did not linger at this stage. It was quite a walk to San Pedro market and when we got there we discovered that the whole place had been evacuated. There were a lot of police so we did not take any photos. We lingered a while but when we saw police in riot gear piling out of vans we heat a hasty retreat. So it was back to the Plaza where we spent ages watching the bands. Reuben, who had sold Charlotte the painting one other day, came over to chat and told us that it was the 400th anniversary of a boys' school and so all the schools were putting on a display in celebration. It actually went on all day.
We went to Green's for lunch - a prawn dish that was delicious. Then we spent some time in the alpaca shops but bought nothing as it was all very expensive. Later we went to the Alpaca factory. Sarah tried on a beautiful wrap but didn't purchase because it had a hood. we went upstaiors to the cheaper products and I got a lovely black and red wrap. On our way back to ther hotel we discovered a little Italian bodega where we had some pinot grigio - my one and only glass of wine in Peru. Back at the hotel we sang Happy Birthday to Magdalena and presented her with her cake. We went to Peruvian Kitchen for dinner but I had chicken noodle soup as I was feeling sick. Tomorrow is our flight and trip to the Amazon jungle.
