Thursday May 23rd 2019 - Homestay; Puno

Antonio knocked for breakfast at 7.30 am but we were up and ready much earlier. We followed him and he went out into a field. He just turned and looked at us saying "cocina" so we realised we were to go to the kitchen for breakfast. Breakfast was a hard-boiled egg, which I didn't eat, and homemade flat bread. The bread and jam was nice. I had manzanilla tea which is camomile tea. That was probably a good idea to ease my upset tummy. Then Irma took out some pof her crocheted bits and piueces which clearly she was trying to sell to me. I selected a sheep and a pig and a few other bits and pieces. I can't remember how much I paid for them but it was very little. Then it was back to the bedroom to pack. A bit later on we helped Antonio to strip stalks of peas and beans - an easy enough job. Jim did a bit of wandering following Antonio.

While I was working on the beans Irma passed through the yard with sheep .

This is the kitchen.

I'm not sure what was up the steps but directly across was another guest room.

Antonio's cow.

I think this fruit was called tumbo, a type of passionfruit. Oswaldo told mer this when he came to check that I was ok, which was very nice of him.

A school building a bit farther down

Potatoes drying in the sun.

All animals are tethered and moved regularly to new grazing areas.

Avoiding the work!

Cleaning quinoa was a complicated process. It began with Irma picking through for non-quinoa. Meanwhile Antonio got a big stone which he then used to grind the quinoa. For some reason he put some water through the quinoa.

Then he poured water through it and strained it through. All work like this seems to take place outdoors kneeling or sitting on the ground.

For lunch we had quinoa soup and then fir pink type potatoes with cheese. Then it was time to say goodbye to Antonio and Irma to return to the port for our departure.

This is Irma dressed for the departure ceremony.

When we got to the port we met up again with Sarah and Charlotte. Sarah was not looking great - she had been sick all night. Charlotte was exhausted - their house was the highest one and she had spent most of the morning squatting grading potatoes!

Oswaldo with our homestay mamas (and one papa) before we departed. Irma is in the darker skirt.

The boat took one and a half hours to get us back to Puno where we had a bit of a walk to get the bus which took us the 4 blocks back to our accommodation via the main plaza. It seems that Puno is a dangerous city but that didn't stop Jim from wandering about.

Puno Cathedral

A church in another square.

Sarah and I were feeling rotten so decided to forego dinner. It was just Jim and Charlotte who dined out. I spent ages getting our luggage sorted and organising laundry for Cusco. When Jim arrived back around 8pm we settled down and I got about 6 hours intermittent sleep.
