Thursday 24th May 2018 - a day in Waterloo

Today we decided to go to Waterloo, the site of the battle of Waterloo, June 18th 1815. The weather was lovely . When we arrived this poster was the first thing we noticed. It was advertising a "Dinner in the Sky" as part of the celebrations from 23rd to 27th of May.

Then  we saw the Lion's Mound.

On the ground to the left of the Lion's Mound there was a tent in an enclosure and a huge crane which was going to bring the table and its guests up into the sky for dinner. We ventured over to see what was going on and were greeted in the tent by a woman who welcomed us with a handshake and the offer of a glass of champagne which we declined.

We were watching proceedings from the cafe across the road and I was amused at the waiter who was explaining what was going on to other customers. He finished off saying, "si on veut faire pipi c'est un probleme". It would be!

This building, accessed via the museum, has a panoramic painting of the Battle of Waterloo.

The exhibitions here were all in Dutch so we just looked at everything without explanations.

The Panoramic painting.

Then we walked to the Hougoumont farmhouse where there is a highly rated audio visual display. It was a very long walk in the heat. When we got there we were told the audio visual thing was broken! So a long walk there and back for just that - a long walk!

This farm saw some bloody fighting during the battle.

Later, back in Leuven.
